Sue was afraid of commitment. Retired and recently arrived in Asheville, she savored her freedom and wanted to keep her options open. She sought opportunities to volunteer, and the idea of helping an adult improve their reading and writing skills intrigued her, but the Literacy Council of Buncombe County required volunteer tutors to commit to their assigned student(s) for an entire year.
