Poem: Of Green Rings and Things

Janet Sloane Benway

What do you do with the ring
When the romance is over?

I kept mine for a year.
Then I sold it back
To the small-town jeweler
Who knew the whole story.
I guess everybody did.

I’m ecumenical.
All the churches knew.
Hadn’t one congregation
Even laughed when I announced
Our engagement?

The ring was three green emerald
alloy stones.
And estate ring.
It was just what I wanted.
Not a diamond at all.

And it’s gone
As gone as you are.
