Travel down quiet, tree-lined Church Street in downtown Asheville to #93 and you’ll feel you’ve arrived at the house of an old friend or relative. The historic three story house with lush landscaping and inviting front porch beckons you in. At the entry you’re enticed with a bowl of nostalgic candy. A large whimsical painting of a heart by local artist Jonas Gerard hangs in the hall. The warm color of the walls and lighting reflects the countenance of the staff who greet you. As you can already sense, this is not a typical law office – and that’s just what Mary intended
Mary Hart started The Hart Law Group in 2006. Forging her own path was not a new idea for Mary – after college, she moved to Alaska where her first job was gutting fish for 16 hours a day on a 250-foot salmon barge. She later moved on to practicing law, but after 19 years in Alaska she found herself drawn back to her North Carolina roots. In 2006, newly single with three young boys, she decided not to look for a position in a large established firm. After seeing the house at 93 Church, she “had this immediate vision that I needed to work in the building and start my own firm.”
Mary likes taking a non-traditional approach to both her life and law practice. Don’t expect to find her in a suit and pumps – she prefers jeans and cowboy boots with funky jewelry. She actively invests in real estate, owning several other businesses that provide luxury vacation rentals – the latest are downtown loft spaces on Church Street and Lexington Avenue. And, she recently became certified as a First Level Reiki Practitioner.
When it comes to her law practice, Mary views it primarily as a customer service industry. She knows that “Lawyer-speak” can be daunting and she emphasizes a down-to-earth approach in handling and explaining your legal matters. Mary promptly returns phone calls (even answering calls herself if the receptionist is unavailable) and truly cares about the firm’s clients and their issues. After all, she and her staff are helping clients prepare for or deal with difficult life events, whether it’s starting a business, purchasing or selling a home, planning an estate, or dealing with the death of a family member. As Mary likes to say – “we’re okay if you think of us as your own personal Charlie’s Angels.”
The Hart Law Group has grown to employ three attorneys and six part and full time staff – all of whom are women! The firm’s practice areas include estate and trust planning and administration, probate, guardianships, domestic partnership planning, residential and commercial real estate closings, transactions and contracts, property disputes, business law, 1031 tax-deferred exchanges, and self-directed IRAs.
Empowering people to protect their loved ones and plan for death and disability is a special focus for Mary. Several times a year, she participates in seminars that educate the public on wills, estate and trust planning, asset protection planning, or domestic partnership planning. Check The Hart Law Group Facebook page periodically for Mary’s upcoming speaking engagements.
