The Last Word

By: Sandi Tomlin-Sutker, Editor

Big Ideas are swirling all around me these days… and I love it!  One great idea given to me by Sherri McLendon is to begin using this page to highlight one woman each month who is truly an Unsung Heroine.  Someone who works and connects with others to help make life better.  And someone who doesn’t get the recognition she deserves.  Please email me the names and contact info of anyone you think WNC Woman readers should know about!

So, my Last Word musings will move to the Words From the Editor on page two.  If I have more to say than I have room for there, I’ll find a space in the magazine or online…

Other Big Ideas for the magazine are the new Pet Care Corner and this month’s new Home Space section.  The vision for WNC Woman has always been to be a sort of “hub” connecting women to each other through articles and profiles and ads.  Women do so much to improve their communities and their families’ lives.

Here are just a few of the non-profits in our area run by and focused on women’s needs:  the Junior League of Asheville; Soroptomist International in Hendersonville; Numina in Boone; Women Helping Other Women in Burnsville; Women for Women (part of Community Foundation of WNC); REACH in various locations.

Nationally & Internationally: Women for Women; Women Helping Others;  Opportunity International;  Women Thrive… just to name a few.

And even though there’s a myth out there that women in business don’t help or mentor other women, a study by Catalyst in 2012 showed that 73% of women “developing” talent in others were doing so for women.

Thanks to all you women and your Big Ideas that make our lives better, richer and much more interesting.
