Brain Integration = Better Learning = A Better Life

Would you take your child to a learning specialist who hated to read and who had completed only two books in the last 42 years?  Would you reconsider if you knew that, after only two days of Brain Integration Therapy, the specialist was overjoyed to be reading and completed six books in six weeks?  Would you be even more interested to discover that the therapy is energetic and involves NO drugs and NO surgery?

 

Brain Integration Therapy may sound like a miracle cure or science fiction, but this is my story, familiar to the majority of others who have completed Brain Integration Therapy. Now, instead of major stress in any reading situation, I am self-confident and at ease.  

 

Prior to this therapy, I lived a decent life by society’s standards – I ran two successful businesses, raised two children, owned a home, and participated in community life.  I am overwhelmed to think how different my life, and my mother’s life, would have been had this therapy been available when I was young.  What might I have studied in college; How many more hours I would have spent on activities other than re-reading, obsessing about reading, and searching for books on tape covering relevant educational topics.   

 

Here’s a brief illustration that may help people relate to my condition. When my brain lost words, the void filled with unrelated thoughts or confusion.  Imagine watching a movie where you see and hear every fourth or fifth minute. If you missed half of the movie, you might still get the gist. But if you missed 70-80%, would you understand the plot and emotionally connect with the characters? If not, would you continue to sit there, or go for popcorn?!  Hopefully, my story will spark awareness and life-changing opportunities for children and adults identifying with my experiences.

 

My Story

Few besides my family and teachers knew that I had to read a page at least seven times before understanding the content, if at all.  Whether I was reading homework, instructions for operating a kitchen appliance, or an author’s essay on the meaning of life, I could see and say the words and tell you what each word meant, but I could not process a sentence’s meaning.

 

Was I born this way or was my problem the result of an auto accident when I was four years old?  My mom broke her nose, and I was thrown around, but I showed no visible signs of injury – until I began stuttering.  

 

Doctors told my family not to worry because, in time, the stuttering would stop.  

 

Time did pass, and I stopped stuttering, but I still had trouble pronouncing some words, and curiously, different words from day to day.  For example, one day I could pronounce special, but not the next day. In my head, I heard the correct pronunciation of words that did not match my pronunciation.  
A few years later, school’s frustration started! Most of my report cards said not working to potential despite my mother’s daily help with spelling and phonics.

 

Reading was a nightmare. Mom taught me to read fairly well but I hated books and considered reading the most boring activity in life. I spent most school reading time daydreaming or creating ways to escape.  Math was easy, but English hardly seemed my primary language. However, miracles do happen, and I graduated from high school.

 

I wanted to become an architect, but that required too much reading. Instead, I chose jobs that required minimal reading, such as a printing business. Thank goodness, I have always had a great memory for what I heard. I devoured books on tape, purchasing them by the caseload or renting them from a company that was the era’s Netflix.

 

After my children left home, I sold my print business of 18 years and enrolled in school to study massage therapy.  I studied anatomy with a great teacher who taught verbally through pictures. I earned As and Bs with that learning style.  Unfortunately, my next class in pathology required reading two chapters each week, and class time was reserved for quick explanations and tests. In this class,  with the same teacher, I earned Ds and Fs. When I spoke with the teacher about my reading difficulties, she blamed me for being lazy and neglecting my studies in favor of partying.  Was she kidding – at my age with the high cost of education?

 

For the state license  test, I hired my teacher with the stipulation that she tutor verbally and direct me to the most important material that might be covered on state tests.  She observed that I answered incorrectly the questions that I definitely knew.  For a question such as, “Where is dinner going to be?” I read “What is dinner going to be” and answered “chicken” instead of “at Tom’s house.” With this new revelation, she apologized for her previous accusations of laziness and focused on setting a practice pace that allowed me to re-read test questions several times and complete the test, without raising my anxiety level too much. I earned my license and operated a therapeutic massage business for five years.

 

So what triggered my transformation and my current career?

 

In 2004, my wife’s friend from Colorado visited. Among new health and healing strategies that she shared, was the Brain Integration work pioneered by Susan McCrossin.  I still remember how I felt the second I heard about this therapy for people with learning difficulties: I knew immediately that she could help.   I was on the next flight to Boulder, with Susan’s book in hand.  I read seven pages on the five-hour flight. Susan worked with me intensively for eight hours over the next two days. On the flight home, I started her book again. Nothing seemed different until I suddenly realized that I was on chapter two. I had completed 100 pages in the same amount of time that I read seven pages only three days earlier!

 

Now I love reading, I understand content without re-reading, and I feel smarter. This is amazing; my self-esteem has soared. I no longer feel embarrassed in front of people because of my poor reading skills. Life, of course, is not without challenges, but mine is much richer, less stressful, and more enjoyable now that my brain works for me.

 

I was so elated and impressed that I decided I must help other people.  Back to school I went, with my new skills in reading, learning, and spelling.  I am now fully certified in the Crossinology® Brain Integration Technique, and I have owned a practice since 2007. Two years ago I opened the Learning Improvement Center, LLC  in Asheville. What a great joy to help clients of all ages find or rediscover the benefits and pleasures of a well-functioning brain!

How long does BIT take?

 

Difficult cases may require up to 12-16 hours of work, while 8-10 hours of BIT may provide good results for others. Individual situations and results vary, but as long as the brain cells are healthy, then chances of improvement are excellent.  After the brain is connected in an optimal way, clients are advised to study any important materials or vocabulary they may have missed in class.
Can BIT help people with Alzheimers or Autism?

 

Unfortunately, we have discovered that BIT is not an effective treatment for Alzheimers or dementia. And, while there has been improvement in Autism cases, the chances for change drop after puberty.
