Getting to the Biltmore Lift

By: Dawn Izon

I live at the North end of Asheville, behind Beaver Lake, and although I have quick access to 19/23, most days when I am not in a frantic rush to meet a deadline, I enjoy driving down Merrimon Ave going toward a southern destination.  Even with the traffic and all the stop lights, it is still a drive that is scenic and colorful.  I appreciate the movement between commercial buildings and the easement in to residential.  It is one of those days when I have a little extra time and I take the route of Merrimon Ave to Hendersonville Rd and beyond. The sun is shining, the weather is mild, the trees are coming into bloom and yes, there are even some flowers brave enough to show their glorious faces.  I arrive at my destination, 1249 Hendersonville Rd, and pull in to the parking area of a modest house, set slightly back off the road, a rather peaceful and surprisingly quiet setting.  There is a garden path, with several seats on the small porch area, a lovely shade tree that will be greatly appreciated in the heat of the summer months.  Upon entering you are met by the comfortable styling of a living room, decorated in tasteful and muted tones.  There is a counter across the room behind which I am greeted by a stunningly beautiful, soft spoken woman, whose smile is instant and gracious.  I have arrived at the offices of Dr. David Harley and Biltmore Plastic Surgery.

As it turns out, the lovely greeter, who is also the office manager, is Mrs. Harley, better known to their patients as Nicole.  She is slim, wearing a flattering black dress and I do not immediately notice that Mrs. Harley is quite pregnant; I later learn that Dr. and Mrs. Harley are expecting their first child on or around July 1, 2012.  They proudly tell me that it is a boy.  For Nicole’s family this will be their first grandchild and the 6th in the proud papa’s family.  Dr. Harley is a proud Papa indeed, as he looks affectionately at his wife during our interview, constantly checking on her comfort.  They are still pretty new to the marriage game, but it would seem this marriage was written in the stars, as I will touch on later.

Dr. David Harley grew up in Waynesville, the son of an Orthopedic Surgeon, so it came as no surprise that he would have that drive to serve his fellow man in a medical capacity.  What did prove to be a different driving force for him was a need to utilize both his entrepreneurial spirit and an artistic streak that runs deep in him.  It was that creative eye that guided him to specialize in plastic and reconstructive surgery, more specifically Head and Neck, and the entrepreneur spirit drove him to open his two offices—one in Asheville and one located in Greenville, SC.

Upon first meeting Dr. Harley, I was a little surprised by his youthful appearance.  He is blessed with what our mothers would have described as a “baby face,” coupled with the fact that I’m not getting any younger and everyone looks too impossibly young to me!  Do not be deceived; behind the gentle blue eyes and relaxed casual demeanor this is a very serious man who has devoted years to study and residency before embarking on his own practice.  Behind that smiling and kind face is a very serious mind.  He has been the recipient of multiple achievements including Valedictorian, Award of Excellence, Award of Distinction, graduating Cum Laude, and the list goes on.  After completing his medical school studies at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, he has undergone a rigorous seven years of accredited training beyond his medical school training.  After having spent his last two years of study in Houston, Texas, the beauty of the Blue Ridge must have been calling to him because David came home to start his own practice and fulfill his destiny.  It is upon his return home that David meets Nicole, the romance begins and in a year’s time they are husband and wife.  The past three years have been monumental for this man—a flourishing private practice, a beautiful wife that he adores and a son on the way.  Kismet.

Plastic Surgery—what is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the words? I’ll admit it—Joan Rivers, who you would think is not the best advertisement, but in a sense—she has done a lot for helping woman express what it is they don’t want to have as the end result of a procedure she might be considering.  Dr. Harley has heard the voice of his patients and has understood the need and desire for a gentler and less invasive means of turning back the hands of time.  The result is called The Biltmore Facelift; the procedure is performed in the relaxing atmosphere of his offices, under a local anesthetic similar to what a dentist uses.  The results are a gentle restoration of the youthful appearance one had previously enjoyed, a true mini-facelift without the need for extreme surgery.  His Biltmore Lift offers a natural and refreshed appearance, minimal downtime and safe long-lasting, affordable results.  This procedure can even achieve the anticipated results on patients that have had previous more traditional facelifts.

What is so unique about the Biltmore Facelift?  Dr. Harley explains that most people have very busy lives and everyone deserves the chance to feel beautiful without taking weeks out of their lives to recover from extensive procedures.  The Biltmore Lift, a minimally invasive necklift and facelift, using a small incision by the ear, is complete in two hours.  Using a short scar technique, he restores a youthful appearance to the patient without the undesired “pulled” look.  The patient walks in, has the procedure and walks out the same day.  Some patients have been out and about the very next day.

Dr. Harley’s vast experience in performing office-based facial cosmetic procedures includes facelift, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), browlift, liposuction and tightening of the neck.  He is unique in his experience with these procedures, having performed thousands of them.  A visit to his office or website will show you many before and after pictures of happy patients.  Along with the pictures there are a plethora of testimonials from patients delighted with the results but also to the gentle and attentive manner in which they received care from Dr. Harley.  Although, with his ever increasing reputation, you might have to wait several weeks for an office visit, when you do meet with Dr. Harley, you are instantly assured that you are his one and only priority.  He is listening to you, to the results you want to achieve, he cares about what motivated you to take the steps to be in his office that day and is dedicated to helping you achieve the goals you want.  It is Dr. Harley that you meet with on your first visit and every visit; it is his personal care and attention you receive.  It is no wonder that his practice has grown through referrals and word of mouth.

That dedication to service is also what drives Dr. Harley to spend time twice monthly doing surgical procedures for cancer and cancer related reconstruction at the VA Hospital.

Two offices, dedication to the needs of our Vets, a son who will be born shortly, an adoring wife who helps in his practice, it’s no wonder this man is smiling!!!!!
