how i know that i’m a writer

Sometimes when I’m writing with a really good pen,
I get lost in the smooth lines, ribbons laying
themselves out on the page and I

want to get out of the way and let the words do
what they need to do, bump and roll, just
resting still and fine, or kicking

their feet up too high to toe the line. Some letters
get free and flat refuse to be tied down, then
words and words blurt out before

I have a thought to weigh them, and away
it all goes to land who knows where
on some flower whose pollen

sticks to my pen and pollinates, mixes male
with female so ideas can procreate at will,
no interference or definition I love

to write in wet purple ink to see the shiny curves
settle on the black lines in military marching
order or spiky and flat slanting

this way then that way all in one word.
If the light is soft and right, I can
watch the sinking ink being part of the page.
