the hot dog stand

Driving into town
I passed the hot dog stand.
sitting still and quiet
no one was yet around.
At the corner,
waiting for the light to change.
I was overwhelmed with feeling
to set aside my vegan leanings.
As odd as it may seem,
that sign became a symbol,
to partake in all we are,
to sample the American dream
I’ve fought against this leading,
for decades now long past,
hoping that America
was much more than that.
More than hot dogs cooking
on a greasy corner grill.
More than young folks dying
in Flanders foreign fields.
More than leaders lying
about the reasons why.
Then the light changed green
and as I moved on,
I heard a small voice saying,
“that America is gone.”
It went the way of greed
it went the way of murde
rit went the way of junk food
from a sidewalk hotdog stand.
